"The best thing about studying art at Coleg Powys is the close community atmosphere within the art and design department because it is small so everyone knows each other. Also, lots of artistic freedom to develop your style and improve."

Art & Design

The Art and Design provision is housed in a modern purpose-built accommodation suite at the Newtown site of the College. Its extensive specialist facilities are unique to the area and include a major Computer-Aided Art and Design resource.

Art students

The programmes vary from the BTEC First Diploma up to National Diploma and the HE preparatory BTEC Foundation Diploma. Students have the opportunity to work in Fine Art, 3D Design, Fashion and Textiles, Photography and Graphic Design. Individuals will also have the chance to study Life Drawing as part of the Foundation and National Diploma programmes.

Over the last five years, students wishing to progress to Higher Education have successfully attained places at University. Other students have entered employment locally in the Art and Design sector. In previous years the department has had visits to Paris, Barcelona, Dublin, London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Applications are welcome from mature students or those without previous art training. As the major single centre for post-16 Art
and Design education in the county, the College offers a service range which is second to none.

Performing Arts

The National programmes in Performing Arts have an established track record in preparing students for Degree programmes and a career in the theatre or related sectors.

Performing Arts

The college is now able to offer the level 2 BTEC First Certificate (see Fusion programme) or diploma programmes in Performing Arts. These one-year programmes allow progression on to the Nationals. The award-winning performance work undertaken in the local community is highly regarded, both within Powys and on a national basis. Extensive use is made of the professional facilities of the College-owned Theatr Hafren and its associated resource base. In addition, the students manage and operate their own very successful theatre company.

This is the most significant resource within Powys for specialist Perfoming Arts education, opportunities are available, subject to demand, in Performance, Drama and Dance as well as Production.
