21st Students Take on Worldskills Accounting Challenge (0)
Three Coleg Powys students based at the Llandrindod Wells campus fought against hard competition at a recent Team Wales Worldskills Accounting competition. Maman Bahandal, Mark Redfern and Sarah Webber, Level 2 learners in AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), travelled to Coleg Gwent in Newport to take part in the event.
17th Painting and Decorating Students Revamp Charity Centre (0)
First year painting and decorating students from Coleg Powys, Newtown, have been brushing up their skills in the community. The students put their talents to excellent use by decorating three rooms at the Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre in Newtown. The charitable organisation provides support to families experiencing domestic abuse and also houses a child contact centre.

Vocational Skills learners from Coleg Powys (Llandrindod and Brecon) and Ysgol Penmaes have worked together in a theatre project to produce a variety performance - a dazzling display of music, song, dance and comedy.

On Saturday 24th March 2 Coleg Powys lecturers took 17 Health and Social Care and Child Care students to The Parachute Centre at Tilstock Airfield to jump out of a plane at 10,000 feet.

A range of part-time adult and community courses will be starting after Easter. These courses are organised by Coleg Powys and are running at various venues throughout Powys.
5th Dutch Lambing Students Help Out at the Farm (0)
On 17th March two veterinary nurse students from Holland arrived at Fronlas Farm, Coleg Powys, to stay for five weeks over the lambing period. As part of their course, the students are required to undertake a work-based placement in order to gain practical lambing experience.

Having entered two pens of 5 early lambs in the Easter Spring Lamb Show and Sale at Welshpool Livestock Market, Farm Manager Gareth Ruggeri came away with 1st and 3rd prize in lambs 36.5kg and over, as well as overall champion. The 10 week old Suffolk x Texel Champions weighed out at 42kg and were bought by Rikki Lloyd of Welshpool for £125 per head.

The Cougar girls recently played Coleg Gwent in the Welsh Hockey League. The conditions at Cwmbran Stadium were miserable, dark and dank with rain clouds lying stationary above the astro turf in defiance of any movement. However, the girls are a hardy bunch and were quite prepared to weather the storm and get on with the game.

Coleg Powys has been offering the British Horse Society Horse Knowledge and Care qualifications at Fronlas Farm in Newtown since 2003. Over this time candidates have been extremely successful at Stages 1, 2 and 3. Courses have commenced in September and run over a full academic year. This year will provide the opportunity to start the Stage 1 qualification in January 2012 to complete in June 2012.

11th College Launches Courses in Sustainability and Heritage (0)
Coleg Powys, in collaboration with Tŷ Mawr, recently launched its new courses in sustainability and heritage construction skills at Tŷ Mawr Farm. The key speaker for the event was Charlie Luxton, the TV celebrity who specializes in sustainable construction. Coleg Powys was joined by representatives from UWIC, Bridgend College and Coleg Llandrillo, who have been key collaborators in the development of the Foundation Degree.

Danny Lydiate, ex Coleg Powys student, is now becoming a household name in the ranks of Welsh rugby. Having signed for the Newport Gwent Dragons in 2007 he quickly caught the eye of Warren Gatland, made the Welsh development tour to the USA in 2008 and won his first cap in 2009. Prior to his departure to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup he was more than happy to talk to his old lecturer Steve Thomas.

Health and Social Care students at Coleg Powys Newtown recently organised and took part in a ‘FLASH FREEZE MOB.’ Around 20 students entered the canteen at lunchtime on 12th May and stood still for 2 minutes whilst everyone else carried on eating and talking.

Steve Cass has joined Coleg Powys as Head of Faculty for Technology, Business and Arts. While at Ludlow College, Steve Cass consistently led the Creative Arts area to a grade one standard. Visiting moderators described his Art and Design department as ‘one of the best centres in the West Midlands’.

Against the backdrop of swinging cuts Coleg Powys Principal, Simon Pirotte, today pledged his support and commitment to the Arts in Powys. The recent government cuts have meant that arts organisations throughout the UK have suffered. Mr Pirotte said, “The potential loss of facilities here in Powys is very sad. We must redouble our efforts and commitment to the arts. Despite the recession, the creative and media arts industry is thriving."

Coleg Powys Newtown students competed in the Powys Cross Country Championships in Dolerw Park, Newtown recently. Students were entered in both the senior girls and senior boys’ categories.

Coleg Powys is organising a challenge on St David’s Day to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. The challenge is a triathlon from North to South Powys with one or two differences. Only three people will undertake the geographical challenge (The College Comrades), which is to visit each College site and deliver a daffodil. Most of the competitors will be based in a gym.

A lunch was held in Themes Restaurant at Coleg Powys last Friday to promote awareness and celebrate the achievements of Apprentices from Coleg Powys. It was part of a series of events that were arranged throughout the week to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week.

The students studying the BTEC First in Health, Social and Child Care at Coleg Powys Newtown held a cake stall and raffle earlier this month to support RNIB Cymru on World Vision Day. The event was very successful and raised £210.
