Apprenticeship Week 2012

Monday 6th to Friday 10th February 2012

Coleg Powys is holding a number of events as part of National Apprenticeship Week 2012. The series of events, which includes a visit from an Assembly Member and a networking lunch with local businesses, aim to promote the benefits of apprenticeships for both students and businesses.

On Monday 6th February the Newtown site will receive a visit from Russell George, the Assembly Member for Montgomeryshire. This will include a question and answer session with 12 Motor Vehicle leaners who are studying on the Pathway to Apprenticeship programme. Subjects up for discussion are Low Carbon Footprint, Hybrid, WG Green Agenda and WG Apprenticeship Policy.

Tuesday 7th February will see the catering students and their mentors cook and serve a 3 course lunch to approximately 50 guests, invited from the engineering, manufacturing, motor vehicle, construction and catering and hospitality industries. This event will also be attended by Representatives from Welsh Government, who will give a presentation about the Apprenticeship matching Service, a free on-line matching service for employers to find suitable apprentices and aspiring apprentices to find exciting opportunities in a business that is right for them. CSkills and Semta, the sector skills councils for construction and engineering as well as People 1st, the sector skills council for catering and hospitality will be represented.

This event will give guests an opportunity to talk to employers who currently employ apprentices, discover how apprentices can help create a productive workplace, make business stand out from others, improve staff retention and reduce recruitment and training costs.

Guests will be offered tours of the college’s excellent workshops, kitchen, restaurant and facilities.

Coleg Powys Principal, Simon Pirotte, said, “I’m delighted to have this opportunity to welcome local businesses into the college and to demonstrate our excellent standards of training in outstanding facilities. The week is a first class opportunity to raise the profile of high quality apprenticeships.”
