Guide to Vocational Qualifications Cymraeg

Applying for a Place

To apply for a place on a course at Coleg Powys simply complete the application form in the prospectus or apply online at www.coleg-powys.ac.uk. You can apply for more than just one choice. An interview will then be arranged at College in Brecon, Llandrindod or Newtown, depending on
where your first choice course will be offered.

You may be offered a place on your course at interview or it may be a conditional offer, subject to satisfactory examination results in August. Where your results do not meet the course requirements you should still send them to us or contact the College as it is usually possible to offer you a place on your second choice or an appropriate alternative.

THE COLLEGE HOLDS CONSULTATION EVENINGS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE GCSE RESULTS TO DISCUSS WITH PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS THE ALTERNATIVES AVAILABLE.

A Guide to Entry Requirements

The diagram below enables you to easily see the appropriate College entry level, based on the qualifications you have obtained or are predicted to obtain. For adult learners, this will be dependent on your work-based experience or relevant qualifications.

Entry Requirements

Your Programme of Study

As a full-time student you will have an individual programme of study. This will include your main course and a variety of other qualifications related to other specialist subjects, awards, GCSEs and Key Skills. Your tailored programme of study will provide you with the opportunity to gain a number of qualifications, all of which will enhance your future career prospects.

Key Skills

Key skills are highly regarded by employers and universities alike. Students who possess these skills improve their chances of getting a job or a place at university. All first time students are expected to achieve Key Skills in Communication, Information Technology and Application of
Number. Other Key Skills (known as the ‘Wider Key Skills’), in Improving own Learning, Working with Others and Problem Solving are also available to students.

Each Key Skill is available at a variety of levels and during induction your tutor will help you decide which level is the most appropriate for you.

Key Skills have been developed in ways to help students achieve them as part of their main course. Students generally need to complete a portfolio of work-related evidence in order to achieve the award.

Bilingual Delivery

The College is currently developing materials and expertise that will allow students to study through Welsh as well as English. For further information about specific programmes please contact Student Services. A full range of support services are available through the medium of Welsh.
